Aspen HQ Fire Station
The new three story downtown headquarters for the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department provides an 18,000 square foot facility that enhances the life-safety mission of Colorado’s oldest volunteer fire-fighting organization. An additional 4,000 square foot component houses the expanded Aspen Thrift Shop.
The new building reinforces the identity of the department within the Aspen community as an organization with rich history and tradition. It is also a symbol of the evolving technologies that reflect the changing mission of the fire-fighters. An educational museum for the department’s archives creates additional opportunities for community interaction between the fire department, Aspen’s locals and visitors.
Bridging the past present and future of Aspen’s downtown core, the architecture responds to the strict historic design guidelines of the City of Aspen’s Historic Preservation Commission. At the same time, the building reflects the ambitions of Volunteer Fire Department and the community it serves. The station opened in Spring of 2010.
