Aspen Middle School
The Aspen School District's new middle school provides a stimulating, light-filled and sustainable teaching environment for the students and teachers. Core classrooms, specialty classrooms, administration, circulation and gymnasium are accommodated in 113,000 square feet. A simple L-Shaped diagram results in easy way finding and exposure to daylight and mountain views for all student spaces.
The exterior materials are comprised of metal panels, maroon, textured brick, aluminum and glass curtain walls. West facing solar louvers provide shade and protection while interior light louvers maximize daylight harvesting. The Community Office of Resource Efficiency (CORE) provided a grant of $250,000 to assist in achieving Gold LEED certification for this project. The building opened for classes in the Fall of 2007. Studio B Architects as the design architect, teamed up with Hutton+Ford Architects of Denver, a school specialist, to collaborate on this project.
