Burlingame Parcel 'D'

The Burlingame Parcel 'D' Affordable Housing Competition consisted of 40 units that range between 650-750 square feet and were targeted for Aspen’s category two and three employee housing criteria. Three teams were selected to develop a design concept on a very difficult narrow 2-acre site located between an industrial complex and a sloping hillside. The parti, or design concept revolves around a south-facing communal courtyard. This courtyard scheme cultivates a sense of community, allows natural light to fill each unit, and provides shelter from the elements. The program is divided into four “compounds”, all united via a common language with each responding to specific site topography. The architecture refers to the existing warehouse vocabulary. The exterior/interior materials require little maintenance and are used in inventive ways along with off-site construction to minimize site disturbance and assembly.
